About Us

Goals are set by your wishbone!
They are achieved by your backbone!

People set goals for themselves because they want more than they have at the present.  It starts in childhood.  Little boys want to be firemen, or astronauts, or big league athletes.  Little girls want to be nurses, or maybe doctors, or astronauts or movie stars.  These childhood dreams usually never get past the dream stage.

When children reach adolescence they begin to develop the ability to reason.  Now, I know that the parents of many teen-agers will disagree with that because it sometimes seems like teens have totally lost touch with reason.  That's because parental reasoning and teen-aged offspring reasoning have the same goal.  Each party wants to be in control.

But, when adolescents are not vying with their parents for control, they do begin to realize that if they want to actually reach one of those childhood dreams they are going to have to do more than just dream about it.

Those who want to be doctors or astronauts begin to understand that they have to pay more attention to their school work if they want their dream to become reality.  Those who want to be professional athletes know they will have to practice, practice and practice.  They begin to establish a process that takes them toward their goal.

If they continue to take the next step in the process they will ultimately achieve what they set out to do.  If they try to skip a step there is a strong likelihood they will not succeed.  And, of course, if they stop they definitely will not succeed.

At this point in their development they have an advantage over adults because the next step is usually planned out for them.  Guidance counselors at school advise them about the courses they will need to take and the grades they need to get in order to qualify for the next step after that.

Adults who want to make changes in their lives don't always get the same kind of direction.  It is probably available to them, but they are going to have to use more initiative and effort just to get access to it.

Another disadvantage adults have is that it is easy to slip back into that adolescent malady of thinking that no advice is needed or wanted.  The thinking is, "I can do this quite well by myself, thank you."

The most common problem adults have in setting and achieving goals is that they set them too high and try to take steps that are too big.  Climbing stairs is easier if you take one step at a time.  Taking two stair steps at a time, or even three, is not too much of an effort if you are physically fit.  But if the stairs are taking you up a great distance it becomes difficult to maintain that kind of pace flight after flight.

When you want to make a positive change in any area of your life set your goal where you can easily reach it in a reasonable amount of time.  Then you can set another goal to keep the improvement growing.

Don't worry about setting goals that are too low.  And don't pay any attention to people who criticize lower goals.  It is supremely important to reach the goals that you set.  It is failing to reach goals that causes discouragement and fatigue, and will make it easier to stop trying.

If you set goals that result in any improvement and continue to reach them, on a consistent basis, you will soon find that your life is improving much faster than the person who is still struggling to reach the too-high goal set in the first place.

Winning makes you a winner.  And when winning becomes a way of life for you, you will never go back to settling for less.  It is the first step, however small, that will take you to the winners circle.
